Get Creative and Win a $5,000 Scholarship! Enter Pier 1 Imports®/UNICEF/Owlkids Greeting Card Contest

2013-11-05

TORONTO, November 5, 2013 – From November 2-25, Canadian children ages 14 or younger are invited to enter this year’s Pier 1 Imports®/UNICEF/Owlkids Greeting Card Contest. Drawing upon this year’s theme “A Joyous Celebration,” children have the opportunity to express their creativity, help provide a better future for children worldwide and have their design featured as UNICEF’s official 2014 greeting card sold in Pier 1 Imports stores nationwide. The contest winner will also receive a $5,000 scholarship and $500 worth of art supplies for his/her school.

“Over the years, some of the best holiday cards have been designed by incredible youth. Each year, we are excited to see how these talented young artists will capture the spirit of the season,” said David Morley, President and CEO of UNICEF Canada. “We are pleased to work with our generous partners, Pier 1 Imports and Owlkids, for another great year. All of the proceeds from the winning greeting card will support UNICEF’s life-saving programs for the most vulnerable children in the hardest-to-reach areas.”

How to enter and win

Entry forms are available at all Pier 1 Imports stores nationwide while supplies last or online at www.pier1.ca, www.unicef.ca or www.owlkids.com. All entries must be hand-drawn and received by Pier 1 Imports’ Canadian offices by November 25, 2013. Submissions will be judged on artistic quality and creative interpretation of this year’s theme. To be eligible, participants must be under 14 years of age as of November 25, 2013.

The Grand Prize award winner of this year’s contest will be announced in January 2014. Visitors to the Pier 1 Imports website, www.pier1.ca, can also take part by voting for a “Canadian Fan’s Choice” award winner between December 16, 2013 and January 1, 2014. Winners will also receive Owlkids surprise gift packs.

Last year’s winner

Abbey S. of Ontario was 13 years old when she won last year’s prize. Abbey’s design of the theme “A Holiday of Hope and Joy” featured a snowman in the background with four children enjoying an outdoor winter day playing hockey. Along with having her design turned into an official UNICEF greeting card sold at Pier 1 Imports stores this holiday season, Abbey also won a $5,000 scholarship, $500 worth of art supplies for her school and a year subscription to an Owlkids magazine.

The Pier 1 Imports/UNICEF/Owlkids Greeting Card Contest started in Canada in 2005 to raise awareness among Canadian school children about UNICEF’s important work for children around the world. It has inspired kids from coast to coast to use their creative talents in a meaningful way. Pier 1 Imports started selling UNICEF greeting cards in North America in 1985 and has raised more than $36 million to date in the U.S. and Canada.

Funds from the sale of cards support UNICEF programs that provide lifesaving medicines, vaccines, nutritious foods, primary education, clean water and sanitation as well as emergency relief for millions of children and women in more than 150 countries. For official rules, visit www.pier1.ca.
