Text “Give” to donate $5 to UNICEF Canada’s Haiti Emergency Fund

2010-01-17

ORONTO, January 18, 2010 – UNICEF Canada, in partnership with the Mobile Giving Foundation and Zipstripe Corporation is offering Canadians an easy way to make donations that will help Haitian children and families affected by the January 12 earthquake.

By texting “Give” or “Don” to 45678 on their mobile phones Canadians can make a $5 donation to UNICEF Canada’s Haiti Emergency Fund.

“We are delighted to partner with Mobile Giving Foundation and Zipstripe Corporation to give Canadians one more way to make donations that will help Haitian children and families who are suffering the devastation of this earthquake,” said Nigel Fisher, President and CEO of UNICEF Canada.  “I urge Canadians to text “Give” or “Don” to 45678 to support UNICEF’s emergency relief efforts in Haiti.”

"Mobile giving is definitely a growing trend. It gives people, especially younger people, the ability to reach out and help immediately in a very personal and affordable way,” said Jim Manis, CEO of Mobile Giving Foundation.

Thanks to the generosity of Canadians, UNICEF Canada has already raised over $5 million dollars for Haiti earthquake emergency relief efforts in just three days, but more resources are urgently needed to protect children who are particularly vulnerable during natural disasters.

UNICEF is on the ground in Haiti providing lifesaving services and items as adequate sanitation, emergency shelters, water purification tablets and emergency family kits.

Over the weekend, cargo planes carrying UNICEF supplies arrived in Port-au-Prince bringing with it enough oral rehydration salts, water purifications tablets, tarpaulins and tents to provide temporary housing for up to 30,000 people. An additional plane is due to land later today with thousands of blankets, tents and water containers. Tonnes of additional supplies are scheduled to arrive by air and land over the weekend and in the coming days.

Donations to UNICEF Canada can also be made online at www.unicef.ca or by calling 1-800-567-4483.   Subscribers who donate by text will have their donation added to their monthly bill.
