Parent Corner: Talking to your kids about tragedy

UNICEF was deeply saddened by the tragic events that unfolded at Sandy Hook Elementary on Friday. We would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and loved ones. Our thoughts are with the community today as children in Newton return to classes for the first time since the shootings.

When events like this occur, our children can be exposed to troubling images, news coverage and public discussions. And as a parent, it is extremely difficult to talk to them about such horrible acts of violence.

That’s why we’ve developed the guide Talking to your kids about tragedy to help you start difficult conversations with the children in your life. You can help them cope with their feelings, feel safe and even respond with positive actions.
