Announcing the Winner of the 2013 Pier 1 Imports/UNICEF/Owlkids Greeting Card Contest

2013-01-29

TORONTO, January 28, 2013 – UNICEF Canada is pleased to announce 13-year-old Abbey S. of Barrie, Ontario is the winner of the 2013 Pier 1 Imports®/UNICEF/Owlkids Greeting Card Contest. Abbey’s design will become an official UNICEF greeting card sold exclusively at Pier 1 Imports’ stores across Canada during the 2013 holiday season.

This year’s second place winner is 14-year-old Natasha H. from Paradise, Newfoundland. Nine-year-old Gillian M. of Unionville, Ontario received third place and was the Fan’s Choice award recipient.

Pier 1 Imports donates 100 per cent of greeting card sales to UNICEF’s work reaching the world’s most vulnerable children. The annual contest was launched in Canada in 2005.

“Every year this contest provides Canadian children with the unique opportunity to use their creativity to help other children around the world” says UNICEF Canada’s President and CEO David Morley. “Funds raised from the sale of the winning design will help provide simple life-saving essentials like clean water, vaccinations, medicines and therapeutic foods.”

With the theme A Holiday of Hope and Joy, nearly 300 children from across Canada entered this year’s competition. Abbey’s brightly coloured winning design depicts four children smiling and skating on a pond beside a snowman and forest of pine trees.  Along with having her design turned into an official UNICEF greeting card, Abbey also won a $5,000 scholarship, $500 worth of art supplies for her school and a year subscription to either Chirp, chickaDEE, or OWL magazine.

Natasha’s second place design depicts two children holding hands looking towards a shining star on a winter’s night. The Fan’s Choice award by Gillian depicts six children from around the world standing in front of a bright blue and green globe.

The Pier 1 Imports/UNICEF/Owlkids Greeting Card Contest has helped raise awareness about UNICEF’s important work for children around the world and has inspired kids from coast to coast to use their creative talents in a meaningful way.
