Increased investment in immunization needed to achieve goal

The following is an excerpt from the article “Increased investment needed to achieve goal” by Meg French, Director of International Programmes, UNICEF Canada.

In 2008, four out of five children around the world were reached with a basic set of vaccines – amazing progress that as a global community we should be proud of. However, it raises the question, what about that fifth child? What can be done to reach that child? It is on that child and the 24 million others who are not immunized that we must now focus our attention.

With funding and support from the Government of Canada, UNICEF has been working on a number of programs to end the preventable deaths of children, such as the Canadian International Immunizations Initiative. Canada has also taken a leadership role in supporting community-level health workers through its Catalytic Initiative to Save a Million Lives.

With a continued investment in immunization and child and maternal health, UNICEF and partners aim to prevent the deaths of almost nine million children every year.
