Mother’s Day - The best gift a mother could have

2009-05-07
May 10 is Mother’s Day – a chance to celebrate the strengths of motherhood. On Mother’s Day, UNICEF celebrates the strengths and trials of a very special group of women – the mothers affected by HIV and AIDS. For many pregnant women in developing countries, HIV and AIDS pose very particular concerns. The mother and the baby who is about to be born are in unnecessary peril. Far too few pregnant women are tested for the virus and far too few are treated. With no diagnosis, and with no treatment, newborns are at risk of contracting the disease too. Testing the newborn in the twelve week window after they are born and getting treatment to both mother and child is essential for their survival. This Mother’s Day UNICEF reminds the world, that every mother who is tested and treated for HIV and AIDS is another mother who may one day see her child grow up healthy. And that’s best gift a mother could have.
