UNICEF on standby to help tsunami-struck countries

2011-03-10

March 11, 2011 - UNICEF is monitoring the unfolding situation following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and is prepared to provide assistance to affected countries should it be requested.

"Our sympathy goes out to the people of Japan and we are hoping that the tsunami does not cause further damage as it travels across the Pacific and is projected to reach as far as the west coasts of Central America and South America in the next 20-24 hours," said Sharon Avery, Chief of Development, UNICEF Canada.

"UNICEF already has prepositioned supplies and personnel in strategic countries throughout the Pacific region and is prepared to provide assistance to countries on tsunami watch such as Indonesia, the Philippines, and Papua New Guinea, in the event of an impact."
