Polio Plus for Pakistan (2013-2017)

DFATD Contribution: $20,000,000

The Polio Plus initiative aims to address a combination of factors that have led to the continued transmission of the polio virus in Pakistan by: increasing the number of children immunized; enhancing community acceptance and the security of health workers delivering the vaccine; and decreasing children's vulnerability to polio due to malnutrition and illness.

UNICEF Humanitarian Appeals (2013)

DFATD Contribution: $2,000,000

March, 2013 - Founded in 1946, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to protect the rights of children and women in developing countries through its development and humanitarian assistance programming. In humanitarian emergencies, UNICEF's activities include the provision of: commodities to treat severe acute malnutrition; safe drinking water, sanitation facilities and hygiene programming; emergency education; basic healthcare; and, protection services for children and women.

With Canada's support, UNICEF's 2013 emergency operations in Burma, Chad, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Pakistan and Somalia aim to provide protection and assistance to an estimated 9 million people affected by conflict, food insecurity, political instability and drought.
