After Typhoon Odette (international name Rai) brought widespread destruction to the Philippines on 16 December, the needs of children and families in affected areas are becoming clear. Based on initial assessments, around 845,000 children need urgent assistance.

Lusanda is a warm, vibrant and strong woman. At just 25 years old, she is a single parent to her 5 year old son *Thabo. They live in Phillipi, an informal settlement in Cape Town, South Africa. Lusanda loves being a mother and the responsibility that comes with caring for her child and creating a home. “My son loves animals, so if there is enough money I like to take him to the zoo. We also like playing soccer together and watching TV. I try and help him with his homework. I taught him to write his name.
