What is K.I.N.D.?

K.I.N.D. stands for Kids in Need of Desks. K.I.N.D. Schools is a school fundraising program all about kids helping kids, and schools helping schools around the globe.

Every child has the right to an education, yet millions of children across the world struggle to learn while sitting on the floor or on the ground. Giving them a desk, where they can write and learn, is the first step toward keeping eager young students in school.

In Malawi, 70 per cent of students do not have a desk or chair. K.I.N.D. Schools aims to change that by delivering desks and other learning essentials to schools in need. K.I.N.D. Schools also provides secondary school scholarships to Malawian girls who are most at risk of missing out on an education.

Fundraising Activity – How to Get Students Involved

In your school and classrooms, take part in “A Day Without Desks” to get a small taste of what kids in many communities around the world experience daily. This activity invites students to spend the day, or part of the day, without a vital learning tool such as a desk. This can be done in the classroom, out on the school field or at home.

Choose a day that works best for your school, and invite students to wear UNICEF blue to show your school is a UNICEF K.I.N.D. School! Leading up to your school’s “A Day Without Desks” activity, spend 15-20 minutes a day with your students to learn about global citizenship using resources provided by UNICEF Canada.
