Senior Accountant 

(Permanent; Full time; Flexible-Hybrid; based in Toronto)

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Finance, the incumbent performs the day-to-day accounting operations including reconciling bank accounts, revenue postings, entering journal entries and cash entries into the financial system and performs payroll entries. The Senior Accountant is also responsible for maintaining the general ledger transactions, financial sub-ledgers, perform month-end duties and support the accountant by reviewing, verifying, approving accounts payable entries, and act as the back up to the Accountant as needed.
The Senior Accountant is responsible for the preparation of the annual T3010 return for organizational compliance with CRA, will also assist in coordinating and consolidating the annual budget and be an integral part of the annual audit.

The responsibilities of the position will include:

Revenue and General Accounting (50%) 

  • Prepare month-end and year-end journal entries.
  • Preparation of year-end fiscal cycle and providing support for the audit and the preparation of the audited financial statements
  • Reconciling and posting donation revenue from Raisers Edge to Financial Edge.
  • Performing monthly bank and revenue reconciliation. 
  • Review accuracy in allocation of GST, HST and QST tax recoveries on invoices and in Nexonia expense reporting tool.
  • Approve and post accounts payables batches prepared by the Accountant.
  • Upload EFT files to bank for payment processing
  • Prepare decline files from EFT payment uploads for adjustment in Raisers Edge.
  • Liaising and troubleshooting with DEA on revenue batches. 
  • Monitoring of internal control systems, operational policies, processes and practices to safeguard financial resources. 
  • Review Gift in Kind donations for tax receipt eligibility.
  • Act as liaison for third party charities on financial matters. (UW, Canada Helps, CHIMP)
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards and organizational policies while continuously improving financial procedures, processes, and internal controls. 
  • Performing special projects as assigned by the Director, Finance and/or COO. 
  • Acting as back up for other team members, as required.

Financial Analyses, Planning & Reporting (30%) 

  • Preparing monthly operating statements, variance analysis, capital budget variances and other financial reports. 
  • Advise in monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on the effectiveness of programs and operations and recommending corrective actions.  Provides advice directly to department leads or may present recommendations to senior leadership for highly complex situations.  
  • Working with department leads to analyze cost effectiveness and return on investment of fundraising initiatives. 
  • Leading the preparation of the annual Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) T3010 Registered Charity Information Return.  
  • Coordinating and consolidating the operating budget and forecast submissions from departments.  
  • Supports department teams in planning and budgeting with variance and trend analysis and monitoring budgetary trends and assists in preparing monthly variance analysis.
  • Provides financial analysis to inform the development of the strategic and annual operating plan.

Payroll Accounting (10%) 

  • Prepares payroll entries through Ceridian Dayforce for review. 
  • Working with People & Organizational Development, ensure payroll is inputted timely and accurately within statutory guidelines.
  • Reconciles payroll account, verify source deduction remittances and other statutory payments to Government.
  • Prepares year-end T4/RL1 and T4A, prepare year-end reports to WSIB, WCB, EHT, etc. and reconcile to statutory deductions submitted.

Financial System Coordination (10%)

  • Supporting the development of financial system enhancements and upgrades, and system integration projects, including providing input into the design, testing and drafting business process documents 
  • Designing, implementing and administering performance dashboards.
  • Managing changes to the Chart of Account structure in the financial system.
  • Ensuring adequate internal control on workflow and system interface with Raiser’s Edge. 
  • Training other staff on the use and production of financial reports, including the dashboard. 
  • Preparing and maintaining system documentation and training manual.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Post secondary degree, college diploma or equivalent year’s work experience in accounting. 
  • A minimum of three (3) plus years’ experience in accounting
  • CPA or other internationally recognized accounting designation or near completion. 
  • Advanced MS Excel skills 
  • Working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge and Financial Edge
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Attention to details. 
  • Strong communications skills (written & verbal). 

Salary Range: $51,000 - $65,000 per year.
