UNICEF Canada is honoured to have received a $1 million contribution over two years form the Slaight family Foundation to help increase UNICEF’s efforts to prevent and treat children experiencing severe malnutrition in drought and conflict-affected areas of Ethiopia.

“Global aid cuts, especially from USAID, have cratered the humanitarian landscape. Millions of children are suffering from the sudden withdrawal of critical life-saving supports and supplies,” said Sevaun Palvetzian, President and CEO of UNICEF Canada. “UNICEF Canada is grateful to receive $1 million over two years from the Slaight Family Foundation to tackle severe acute malnutrition in drought and conflict-affected areas of Ethiopia. This emergency support by the Slaight Family Foundation is an inspired example of Canadian philanthropy at its best—doubling down where others retreat.”

This generous contribution will enable UNICEF to:

  • Acquire and deliver nearly 1.3 million individual packets of Ready-to-use-Therapeutic-Food (RUTF), a critical tool in saving children’s lives from malnutrition;
  • Screen 200,000 children for the signs and symptoms of malnutrition through community-based services; and
  • Admit close to 11,000 children for life-saving treatment from severe wasting, one of the worst forms of malnutrition.
