One billion children at ‘extremely high risk’ of the impacts of the climate crisis - UNICEF

Children in the Central African Republic, Chad, and Nigeria are among the most at risk of climate change, according to UNICEF’s first child-focused climate risk index.

On 4 March 2021, a child plays in the floodwaters in Gatumba, located near Bujumbura in Burundi. At least 50,000 people have been affected by the floods in the region in the past year. A few kilometres from the floodwaters, a big IDP camp has been formed to shelter people displaced by the flooding. Burundi is extremely vulnerable to climate change and climate change -triggered natural disasters- and as one of the poorest countries in the world, it has very little means to protect its population.

Early assessments show extensive quake damage to schools in Haiti

Preliminary assessments conducted Tuesday by UNICEF and Haitian officials in one of the three departments hardest hit by Saturday’s earthquake, followed by Tropical Depression Grace on Monday, revealed extensive destruction to schools, just weeks before they are due to re-open.

On 17 August 2021, sustained damage to College Mazenod in Camp-Perrin, Les Cayes, Haiti from the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on 14 August 2021.

In the last few months, the conflict has escalated and there are over 18 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. 4 million children are out of school. Around 400,000 people have left their homes to seek refuge; over half are children.

Mustapha Ben Messaoud, Chief Field Operations visit Haji internally displaced camp who who have left their homes due to war and conflict. In the last few months, the conflict has escalated and there are over 18 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. 4 million children are out of school. Around 400,000 people have left their homes to seek refuge; over half are children. We’ve prepositioned essential supplies, such as ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) and vaccines throughout the country.
