Haiti earthquake: 3 questions for Yama Laurent

Following the earthquake in Haiti on August 14, we talked with UNICEF Canada ambassador Yama Laurent, who originally grew up in Haiti before moving to Canada, about her experiences with the 2010 Haiti earthquake, as well as how her family still in Haiti is coping in the aftermath.

On 6 February, Luisnez, 10, sweeps away garbage and debris in front of her destroyed home, in Cité Soleil, one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Port-au-Prince, the capital. Together with three younger siblings and her mother, Luisnez is among many who sleep outdoors, or in makeshift tents, because their homes were damaged or destroyed during the earthquake or because they fear additional aftershocks “I don’t know what happened,” she said. “I was playing outside and everything started to fall."
